Hello! I realise it has been a while since I last updated my blog section, I’ve had quite a busy summer - so, I thought I’d catch you up now! After made in Dagenham ended, I had three assessments to complete for my Masters’, one was creating this website and blog, another was a practical assessment, in which we had to chose our own rep and present it as a performance and the final assessment was my dissertation, which was aurguably the hardest element of the course.
The title of my dissertation was ‘Vocal Stimming and Echolalia: Autistic expressions of joy, sadness and everything in between, and why the Autistic brain may be hard wired to sing.’ - the topic was enthralling and I was left with the feeling that there was still so much to explore and uncover in this area which I wholeheartedly believe can improve quality of life for Autistic people such as myself, which led to the idea of a PhD being in my future - though not any time soon! Due to my passion for the subject and the help of my brilliant tutor and volunteers, I found the experience of the dissertation to be inspirational and extremely enjoyable.
After completing my dissertation, my parents surprised me with a holdiay so I could have a break after spending all summer writing a 14,000 word thesis. After my holiday I returned to London and began to prep for grad life in the industry. I filmed my new monologue which is from the play ‘The Duck’ by Rhi Lloyd Williams, which is about an Autistic woman discovering she is Autistic later on in life. I was 20 when I recieved my autism diagnosis so a lot of the content in this play really resonated with me. As I currently do not have an agent, the first task I set myself was to research and apply for talent agencies. This was rather hard as I had already submitted to around 50 agents in March and therefore could not re-submit myself to them this soon. I managed to find just over 20 agencies that I had not previously applied to, all of which I was extremely excited about the prospect of joining. While I wait for replies I am submitting myself for everything I am appropriate for on Spotlight and anywhere else I can see opportunities.
After the show ended, I also began to learn to play the guitar. Due to my ADHD brain, I wanted to get good, fast. So I used some of my savings to buy a guitar and two months of intensive lessons. While writing my dissertation I was also learning to play with the intention of creating my own acoustic covers of musical theatre songs on TikTok, Instagram and here - while also using my platform to discuss my neurodiversity and share my story. I’m pleased to inform you that recently I have started releasing my own covers of musical theatre rep on the guitar, I am usually so hard on myself but even I have to admit I’ve made great progress on the instrument in the last 2 months! If you’d like to check out my covers, please head over to the actor-must section of my website!
I think that really this time is all about creating opportunities for myself, carving a path into the industry that leads me to my dream jobs - I rarely take the path that’s well trodden but I wholeheartedly believe the journey I take will lead me to success.
